Hometown girl Villavicencio returned to Willits for annual event

Camille Villavicencio, female vocalist of Double Standyrd, never thought she’d be starting a rock band in her 40s, let alone that it’d take off and she’d wind up touring in one. The Ukiah resident, and insurance underwriter, had never even been in a band until two years ago. But as luck would have it an open-mic night at the Office, a Ukiah bar, led to just that. Her band headlined the Frontier Days Street Dance, for the second time, playing in front of a huge crowd in Villavicencio’s home town of Willits, on what also happened to be the week preceding her 25th Willits High School reunion.
“I’m am 42 years old and this is the first band I’ve ever been in. Never when I went to the open-mic did I think it’d turn into me singing with the band.”
The open-mic had been organized by Jim Switzer (lead guitar), in honor of Marc Hansen, a prominent local musician, who was killed in a car crash in February 2012. Hansen played in the blues-rock duo The Hansen & Raitt Band which was sometimes referred to as Mendocino County’s “house band,” giving Double Standyrd a spiritual connection to the old Mendocino music scene.
